external hard drive thingy

i'm using XP and i just bought an 80gig hardrive and put it in a portable external enclosure that uses USB to connect. when i plug it in, it shows up in my taskbar, and everything indicates it is working, except i have now idea how to access it. no new drive shows up in 'my computer' like it would if you plugged in a portable zip drive or something. how how i get to the damn thing to use it?
thanks

-daniel
