Harddrive Types !
I am just to build a new server but got stuck when I had to choose which type of harddrive I had to choose, If someone could give me of the current existing harddrive types such as scsi etc and perhaps a small tip about them !
BTW would they be compatible with normal pc motherboards or do I need additional hardware ? Thankyou

SCSI is common for high-level servers, because it is very fast, can support up to 15 devices per channel, can be hot-swappable, and the components are quite reliable. Costs a lot, and you will need to purchase a controller card.
For a cheaper, entry-level server, you should check out SATA, which though not as fast as SCSI, is much more inexpensive. Many mobos come with built in SATA RAID 0/1 support, but for a dedicated server, you would still probably want a controller card. HTH

You mean "ATA" and IDE?
IDE has been arounf for years now, I dont even know what was before it! . ATA is now the standard though, IDE is only 33Mbps speed, while ATA is 66/100/133Kbps depending on your Hard Drive. They look like the SCSI connectors, but have less pinds (IDE = 40, ATA = 39). Oh yeah, ATA and IDE look almost identical, apart from ATA having more little line thingies on it, and ATA is IDE compatible aswell. |

Are there any ide ot ultra ata hdd that have more than 1000rpm speed ?
What are the connection speeds of sata and scsi ? Ata = 133mbps Ide = 33mbps Is that right ? |

I don't know of any 10000rpm ata drives. Western digital makes 10000rpm SATA drives, but for 10000-15000rpm drives you're mostly looking at SCSI. Nominal transfer rates: SATA- 150mbps Ultra160 SCSI- 160mbps Ultra320 SCSI- 320mbps |

I just finished qualifying a server at work. We used Ultra320 SCSI in RAID 1 with a spare. Dual xeon 3 ghz CPUs.
I think you're better off posting your budget and what you need the server to do and someone here might be able to help you better. |

We intent to connect this server with almost 54 pc's ''Lan'' fast ethernet. If you could give me the names and model types of good hardware models which I can choose from and have excellent results I would realy appreciate. Regarding our budget ,I can say it isn't very restricted, our target is quality and performance !
BTW, I have taken a look at intel's website and they have a new chipset Intel Chipset but I say to myself whats the use of buying the chipset on her own ? You can't install it on your motherboard ! |

I have been reading some useful information about differences between scsi and ata/ide, and got to know that i need a controller for scsi. Whats this for but ?
Are there any motherboard that support scsi without the need of controllers ? And are there any differences between them ? If this is the transfer rate Ultra320 SCSI- 320mbps What is the the RPM of this drive ? |

If cost is no object, get ultra320 scsi, 15000rpm. It is the ultimate performance leader. I know of no motherboards that have built in SCSI support. A good cost/performance compromise could be 10000rpm SATA drives with a good raid controller card. (The controller does just that, controls the drives, tells them what to do)

(^^;?(I heard of that,)
All the motherboard which have that chipcets should be called "Intel Motherboard". And Intel forced the vendor to label it "Intel Inside". Chipcets only is not available except manufacturers probably. |

But is it avalible at the moment with a motherboard ?
Do scsi have built in coolers/fans ? |

Would you suggest non ibm servers such as solaris, apache etc ?

Yes you can get Intel mother board and would get the machine which has it.
Are you all right? Solaris is OS, and apache is Unix programme. If you are beginner, you'd better not attach your mind to such peripherals, and go to the shop which is near enough to drop by oftenly and suppot you. Find such a shop which deals with servers or workstations. |
