hdd brands
I'm thinking of getting another hdd.... probably something around 40-gigs, just for personal use 'n' stuff....
Regardless, tho, what are your opinions regarding brand's? I've heard alot against Western Digital, and both praises and rants for both Maxtor and Seagate..... Currently I have a Maxtor, and it's worked perfectly for the year that I've had it.... Any strong opinions, anyone?

As I've probably ranted before, I used to work as a technician at my college's IT dept. Whenever a HDD would fail, it would go to me, as apparently they thought I was some kind of magic backup specialist. Anyways, of all of the HDD's that came my way, a majority, were Western Digital and Seagate. A small portion were Maxtor, but they were all "hot off the press" 200Gb drives that hadn't even been on the market for a month yet.
So here's my "strong opinion": If you get a WD or SG drive, expect it to fail eventually. If you get a Maxtor, it may be DOA, but that can be fixed easily, and when you get one that works, then you're gonna be set for a long time. FYI: I have a Maztor 60Gb HDD for my main, and a 13Gb Seagate for an aux/storage. I couldn't afford another Maxtor at the time, and the Seagate was free, so a geek's gotta do what a geek's gotta do. ![]() P.S. Ever since I got my Seagate, it's made funky noises whenever I access it, like something's loose inside. I expect it to fail relatively soon. haha

I like both Maxtor and WD, never had a Seagate. Anyway, went WD after I found my motherboard didn't take kindly to Maxtor. I used to run a very hot computer and didn't have a problem with it. Did have a maxtor fail on me a very very long time ago though.

None of the above ever failed for me. But I never bought the absolute latest max capacity drive, either, which seem to fail all the time.

Personally, I use WD and have had no problems. Have also heard good about Seagate, less good about Maxtor. Pretty much the opposite of thejim, lol. Any will probably be fine for you though, just be sure you keep the recipt.

I've had 3 out of 3 Maxtors die on me and my WD is so-far-so-good. Actually, in my main machine right now is a 120 WD for the boot and a 120 Maxtor that wont boot cause of a software error but works fine as a slave drive.
