HDD not recognized after changing drive Letter

I changed the drive letter of an external 2.5' HDD (from F to D).

Then for some reason I suddenly can't use the drive anymore.

Now when I plug it, the error message is on Win7 is "You need to format the disk in drive"
The error on Win XP is D:\ is not accessible

which is quite weird.

The drive is not used much, it never had surface problems, etc.
Of course I don't want to format it because I have some info there.

Any ideas about what the problem could be...?

Thanks

Does it work if you plug it into a different computer? If not, you possibly did something incorrectly when changing the drive letter.

In windows 7, go to control panel then to Administrativ Tools-computer menagment and to disk menagment. On every computrer you maybee use, the letter D is allredy busy whit hdd or particion of hdd, or with optical drive.
In the disk menagment you mast give some else letter to your external hdd. after thet, the OS will recognize thet hdd.

The computer doesn't see it, even in Disk Management.

I tried it on a couple of different computers but same result.

The optical drive is E, there no drive assigned with D letter...

Well that is a weird problem but you may look on internet for some programs that can give information from your drive and then format it...

In my opinion there might be some connection problem with this. You need to check all the wire connections carefully.
