Hi guys,
first my spec, im new to this as you will probably be able to tell! i have a PC-CHIPS M810LMR (socket A) motherboard i have an AMD DURON 700 CPU (socket A) with heatsink and fan i have 128MB SDRAM i have a 40GB maxtor HDD i have a sony CD-RW set to master i have a standard CD drive set to slave i have 350W PSU i have a chassis mounted fan i am running win98 se Now for my problem! I built the pc myself without any real problems and it was all working really well, the mobo/CPU/RAM were all bought as a pakage ao there are no compatability problems. I put it all in a spanking ATX case and was chuffed to finnaly have a semi decent pc and see it all working! Then i came across a website about overclocking the duron 700 and making it a lot faster, over 1Ghz, GREAT!! i thought as i began dismantling my pride and joy, i removed the mobo and took the fan and heatsink of the CPU and proceded to link the L7 (to increse the power input to 1.85v) an L1 (unlock the multiplyer) brigdes by using an HB2 pencil as described in the article, with a sping in my step i began putting the pc back together, i switched the power on and everything seemed ok untill the BIOS began to load windows, as this happened the CPU fan went REALLY fast and there was the awfull smell of computer death in the air i quckly switched off the power and took the mobo out to investigate what i had done, i took the heatsink (which was hotter than molten lava) off and the fan and removed the CPU, there was a small scorch mark on the back of it i quickly removed all the moding i had done with a rubber nad assembled the pc once again, now all that happens is as follows:Good things: The PSU runs (i read that the PSU only runs when connected to a working mobo???) The HDD can be heard to be doing something The CD drives can be heard to be doing something The heatsink fan runs and the heatsink gets warm Bad things: The monitor does not seem to be getting any input, it goes into power saving mode, i have plugged this monitor into another pc and it works fine I do not have acsess to another compatable pc so i cant check the CPU, is it possible i have fried the part of the CPU that controlls the monitor? I hope not. Thanks for taking the time to read this, any feedback is greatly appreciated! thanks, paul |

I think its the cpu (there isn't a separate monitor control or something). Scorch marks and heat like that pretty much point to the cpu being fried. Without another computer to test in, you can't be sure. However, a new 800mhz Duron is only $35 or so, so replacement is pretty painless.

Again, its tough to tell. It sounds like the mobo might be OK, but until you have a working cpu, you won't be sure. Or it might be ok now, but fail sooner than it otherwise would have. You'll just have to wait and see. (And if the board is in trouble, I'd recommend ASUS or Abit as good overclocking boards).

OPen case.. shi ttttttttttttttttttttttt no fan>>> this cant b good. learnt my leasson dont just computer in suit case>> its not clothes<< well u will find that replacing the processor wont help eaither. U would have most likely fried some componets of the board and cpu. well l8ers have a nice day!! |
