since you are going to use it for gaming, get a desktop, unless there is a very specific reason for getting a laptop. you get so much more power out of a desktop for so much little cost.

If not, i would probably suggest the A70

I would choose the m30 for the GeForceGo 5200 graphics card and the newer cpu technology.

Might want to find some benchmarks between the cpu's and video cards.

ok, just because I'm curious, why do you NEED a laptop for school? do they require that every student have a laptop?

ok, that makes sense then. I would still choose the A70 because you aren't going to get a large enough performance boost with the Centrino. basicly from what i've found out (and anyone correct me if i'm wrong) is that the Centrino series is simply a pentium 4 with a lower power consumption and heat buildup, requiring less power to run, thus longer life in the stand-alone battery. So... I would suggest getting the faster clock cycle frequency and just realizing that the battery will only really last you 4 hours of constant use (good enough to get you through a few lectures a day) and just plugging it in at night for a recharge. You'll get better performance in the long run.

well, considering the RAM speeds and sizes are the same, you aren't changing (at least i don't think you are) bus speeds or thus main boards, so just pick the faster clock cycle, the A70 is the obvious choice for gaming.

The pentium M is not the same as a P4. It is a new architecture designed specifically for notebooks, and coupled with integrated wireless and such makes up the vaunted "centrino technology".

A 1.6ghz Pentium M will perform about the same as the 3.06 P4-M, so your 1.5ghz Pentium M would be a hair slower. The fx5200 is the better graphics solution in this case (plus it doesn't share system memory), and in gaming, its the graphics card that is usually the most important. Since the a70 does use shared video memory, realize that while both say they come w/ 512mb of ram, you really lose 64mb to the video on the a70.

Taken overall, I think both will be very similar in gaming performance. If price is not a factor, I would get the m30 for its extra battery life, bigger hdd, and more features, since it will perform about the same for games.

Either will be more than enough for normal tasks. Neither will be especially good on modern games, compared to a desktop. Both will be similar in their gaming ability.
