Help With Error
alright guys.2 days ago i bought a new heatsink/fan combo and a new mobo.the abit nf7-s2 to be exact.i installed it and i plugged in my hdd and turned it on and it formatted it.so i was like ok its cool.i go to install xp and it locks up and i finally got it to finish and then i got this blue screen with error.windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer......and in the middle it says please remove any newly installed harddrives and controllers.so i unplug my harddrive and plug in my dads and it works fine....kinda sluggish though. i also got alot of restarts when i had mine in.
the specs were: AMD ATHLON XP 2600+ TBRED w/ Thermaltake Volcano +7 Abit NF7-S2 30GB Quantum Fireball hdd(the one that wouldnt work) now i put in a 10GB Maxtor that works. 16mb video card im using until i get the 9800pro 450Watt PowMax PSU Asus Cd/DVD drive please help |

ok, just for the record, "installing" a new heatsink and fan will not change any software specs (except possibly fan/heat monitoring software) and thus your Hard Drive shouldn't have been formatted. Secondly, it sounds like something got changed in your BIOS. so check that out. It could aslo be a bad format, or a bad install. so you can try those again.

If you have a new Mobo, you have a new build. You need to treat it as a new build, reformat and partition the HD and then install your O/S. Since you have a new mobo with an older HD, your BIOS should be fine. It's not hard to flash a BIOS but only do it if you have to. ABIT has instructions on how to do it.

alright heres the message i get when i use MY 30gb hdd.its a blue screen with white lettering
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart. If this screen appears again follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer, remove any newly installed hard drives or harddrive controllers. Check the harddrive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corrpution and then restart your computer. ok, first let me make sure of something. Are you formatting the drive 100% and booting to the disc? if you just pop the CD in while Windows is running, it won't usually work. You have to change your BIOS to be set so that you will boot to your CD-ROM before your hard drive, then boot to the disc. then format, then install.

alright i have the stupid damned broken harddrive in my hand right now.it looks like two of the ide pins are bent a little.

bingo, i would suggest you unbend them, buy a new HD, save IF YOU CAN, and toss the bent one out. That would be your safest solution, and with HD's being fairly inexpensive, it's ok.

so thats probably the reason for the frequent restarts WHEN i could get it to work and the stupid "blue screen of hdd death"

Most likely. In reality, the pins could be ok and fixed easily and be good as new. But the chances are MUCH greater that the internal solderings into the board have been damaged, severed, or just plain borken. So IF you can retrieve some data after you buy the new one, you got lucky. If not, it was expected. Next time you install hardware or any sort, it's not always necessary to remove all cables and devices. For a heatsink, I wouldn't remove much more than the black power cord that runs out of the back.
