Internet speed and computer hardward

Hi,

My ISP told me I will have a download speed of 3.0 Mbs. I am geting speed of 400kbs. They did all the testing, they are saying everything is fine nothing wrong with their service/modem. They told me I am geting this low speed because something is wring with my computer. I have a brand new computer, P4, 512M memory, 80GB hard. I wonder what computer hardware problem can casue my internet speed to slow down?

Thanks

Your computer is fast enough, but what kind of a modem do you have? Maybe that is it. Also, are you hooked directly to your modem or do you run it through a hub/router first? Those are the things I would look into. After you find out that there is nothing wrong with your side make your provider bring in a computer/laptop and prove that they can get 3.0 Mbs on a trusted computer. My guess it's a lot of BS.

good luck!

Also, where are you you trying to download from? Just because you may be able to get 3mbps bandwidth doesn't mean that the place you're downloading has that sort of uploading bandwidth. I've found a lot of the time you won't get close to the specified speed on any individual d/l. However, see if you can get 4-5 downloads going, and see if they are all similar speed. If you have 5+ 400kbps downloads going, then you are getting close to a total of 3mbps, just not from any one source.

I have tried many different site that let you test you Bandwidth/DSL speed, I probably tried 10 different site all have the same results. My speed varies from 265kbs to 950 kbs.

1. Are you sure you're comparing apples to apples? If they are saying 3Mbits/sec and you are getting results in kbytes/sec, you need to divide bits by 8 to get comparable terms.
2. Since you say 3mbps, I assume you have cable internet? If so, then your bandwidth will vary depending on the useage of others with cable internet in your area. Have you noticed a correlation between time and speed? That is, I would expect you would have your slowest speeds during early evenings, and higher at night b/c less people are using the net.

I did a quick calculation and 3Mbits/8=375,000 bytes/sec.

So if you are running a 3Mbits connection, you seem to be getting about what you should.

Nothing is wrong with your computer. I have 2,5Mbs and I am downloading about 320kbs, that's normal.

You internet problem could be from many reasons,

first do you have cable or dsl

DSL-The farther your away from your ISP, the slower the connection

Cable-Will slow down if your ISP allows more computers in the area.

Also if you have a network and you have slower machines, could possibly slow it down.

Also if you have like 500 ft of etherent cable your speed will drop

Goodluck
