Laptop turns itself on

I just recently purchase a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Vista. Occasionally, after shutting down the laptop (Vista quick [normal] shutdown), it will turn itself back on. This has happened about eight times in the month that I have had it, and occurs between 5 seconds and 3 minutes of shutting down the machine.

The LAN PXE boot is disabled.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Just to check, you are shutting down the machine and not re-starting !?

Yes, it's most definitely a shutdown

It does fully power off (well it's Vista super low power mode)...then it just starts to turn itself on after a while (has happened after a few seconds, and a few minutes).

Extremely strange. Perhaps I'll try disabling USB boot in the BIOS incase my monitor is sending it a signal to power on.

Has only happened a handful of times however.

Maybe you should send it back to dell! Sounds like the Mobo is not storing the "state" info correctly.

Does this happen when powered from the battery or when it's plugged into the mains ?

I've actually never really run it off battery, it always sits on my desk and is plugged in.

It hasn't happened again in the past few days. Maybe I'll give Dell a call if it happens again... if the motherboard wasn't storing the state info as suggested would you see any other possible problems/symptoms that could arise?

just curious...does the the laptop have an IR port?

I doubt seriously that it's probable but it may be possible that an errant infra red signal could possibly initialize the system?

I can wake up my PDA by "beaming" an IR signal to it...

lots of remote controls for entertainment devices use IR...

errant RF signals are another outside possibility as it could *possibly* effect any of several integrated hardware components.

No visible IR port. I do keep my BlackBerry about a foot away from my laptop and usually turn it on about the same time I turn my laptop off, so it's something I will keep an eye on incase it is interference of a sort.

Check to see in the bios if the wake on lan option has been enabled.......if it is....dis able it.
I would bet that the bluetooth is enabled on that laptop also.
You may want to dis able the bluetooth if you are not using it.

I'm not a fan of the Dell software. I have seen so many issues that arise from the utilities trying to control what xp already does a fine job of doing. When working with a dell I always illiminate the software possibilities first. That generally takes care of the problem about 75% of the time.

Before someone points it out to me......I did notice that he is running vista. But my opinion......when you buy a dell.......you are a dell guinea pig.........lol.

It hasn't happened again recently, but I'll keep watching.

Wake on lan is disabled. Laptop doesn't have any bluetooth.

Here is the link to the dell support for drivers on that laptop.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WLH&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_9400&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en

I do notice that it has had a recent bios update.
I did not have the service tag number so I could look at the specific version.....but it does appear to have a bluetooth that comes stock with it. You may have to turn it on for it to be recognized.
Dell does have a utility for driver updates that comes with the laptop and will auto load them if you want. I would take a look at all the driver updates if I were you and see if the laptop is current.
Just because you bought a new laptop ...... It doesn't mean that it hasn't been sitting on a shelf at the dell warehouse waiting for a buyer, while updates have been made that will fix or improve performance.

I've done the BIOS update. (It's a 9400 not a 6400). The only issue mentioned in the BIOS update was something about dropping the wireless card.

Sorry about that.....I had just responded to another thread regarding screen problems in a 6400 when I accessed dell.
It does appear that your laptop is bluetooth capable as well.
Anyway........good luck.
