Looking for how-to information for first time PC builder
Hi folks,
I'm wondering if any of you know of forums specifically geared towards beginner PC builders. I'm stationed in Iraq right now and am planning on building my own gaming rig when I get home in six months. I've been reading lots of magazines and am somewhat familiar now with the basics of what's what inside the case and I have a fairly good idea of most of the hardware I want, but I really am not comfortable with being able to put it all together and configure it properly without making some major (read expensive) mistakes. Thanks in advance! Rich |

While they're not specifically for beginners, the hardware forums on sites like GameSpot can be helpful. The last time I looked at GS's there seemed to be quite a few beginners posting questions there.
Check out the sites of some of the hardware mags you've been reading -- there's a good chance they'll have some beginner's guides archived.

They aren't all forums, but there are several good step by step tutorials in that search. Check them out, and if you have specific questions, come back here! ![]()

There are also many, many websites you can order parts from which have extensive information and compatability info. For example, upgradesource.com is one of them (not a plug).
Keep it clean, stay away from static and double check all your work before powering up and you should be ok. I was nervous the first time I did this, too, but there's nothing like actually doing it and having it work. Most importantly make sure you read all instructions and understand how parts are installed. Especially concerning memory and the CPU/fan. |

two tips that i've been taught, 1) when you do this, plug in the powersupply, make sure it's attached to the case, and turn it on. you won't want to plug in any boards, but keep the power flowing to the supply from the wall outlet. then keep a hand on the case while you handle parts. this will greatly reduce your chance of static due to the grounding effect the PS has on the case (it's standard practice for any 3-prong plugs). 2) when you seat the powersupply on the chip, at all costs avoid ROCKING the heat sink onto the chip, this has the possibility to bend, crack, chip, or break your CPU, and that would be a huge and expensive mistake.
and i would like to show my appreciation for the military, i've got some buddys in the military and would like to see nothing better than to have them come home safe, as well as you rich. AdamTT |
