Mates CPU Won't Start
So we have just moved house, d my housemates cpu won't turn on.
Ok so it does turn on for aout 1-2 secs, then shuts straight off, and to try to turn it back on, we must unplug and then plug it in again, and we have the same sult, has anybody got any ideas as to why the computer won't turn on? |

Hi geoffs87 and welcome to Dev Shed.
First thing to do would be to open the case and ensure that all components are seated correctly and all connections are connected. Something may have come loose when moving. If everything is okay, then it could be possible that one of the components has become damaged.

(^^;?(It's not so rare.)
Pretty certainly, something is shorted. In other word, it's the condition of power switch ever contacted. Check it thoroughly. |

If everything is connected fine, then it is possible that it could either be the cpu, motherboard or PSU.
Problem is, if one of those components is shot, then there is the chance that it has taken another with it. Double check all the power connectors coming from the PSU onto the motherboard and ensure they are correctly inserted. |

General rule is to try to disconnect everything excpet the bare minimum. So just leave one RAM module in it, Graphic Card and obviosly CPU.
If it works, then try putting back one thing at a time - untill you find the problem. I've heard of some HD's that died in such a way to pull lot's of curent/power when turned on. So it might be the case. But most likely it's the power supply. Also try to unplug and then plug again the Graphic Card. I had cases when everything appeared to be inserted right into the slot - but actualy it wasn't.

There has probably ben a power surge and the PSU is knackered - maybe even the CPU.
