Memory
I am building my computer, and was told that a 512mb stick of memory would be enough.... i plan to play games and surf the net, and do homework on this computer.... is it enough or should i add say another 256mb stick?

It's real easy to add more later. If you have the money, get it now. Or wait to see if you need it or if memory prices drop.

If you can afford it, get more now, else its easy to add later. Note: if you want to use the ram in Dual channel mode, you have to have the same size for both sticks.

Dual channel lets both sticks have their own channel, effectively doubling the memory bandwidth. You'd have to see in your motherboard manual if it supports dual channel ram.

so i take it that dual channel is a good thing to have?

If you have a board that supports it, you might as well use it, though in most applications it results in a pretty small performance gain. Not worth buying a new mobo or something, but nice if you have it.
