modem installed but no POST!

Hello,
I just bought myself a new internal PCI modem after the last one decided to gave up. After installing it my pc refused to start up..not even reaching POST stage and no signal to the monitor. But all my cpu fan and stuff are running. Then i took up the modem and everything works fine! I changed the pci slot and still the same thing happens. IS this because of PCI conflicts? how do i resolve this please? FYI my system is as follows:
AMD Athlon 1.4
ASUS A7V133-C
640mb RAM
SB Live! 5.1
GForce4 Mx440

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like a bad modem. Even if you have irq conflicts you should still post.

Go into your BIOS and reserve IRQ 5, if it isn't already, restart, shut down, reinstall the modem.

May or may not work. If it does, I'll tell you why. If not, why bother?

Quick test for your PCI slots: does something else (say, a sound or video card) in the same slot work? If so, slot is Ok.
