Mouse Clicks Have No Effect

My Intellimouse Explorer button clicks occassionally have no effect. Per Microsoft Knowledge Base article 321122 on this problem, I checked out Device Manager and the Registry. In Device Manager under Human Interface Devices, there are duplicate entries for HID-Compliant Device and USB Human Interface Device. Should there be 2 entries for each? There is also an entry for my mouse. Under Mice and Other Pointing Devices it has another entry for my mouse along with the word "Intellipoint" in parentheses. Should there be entries for my mouse in two places?
Also, article 321122 gives instructions for removing Registry subkeys that indicate any kind of mouse. There are several subkeys that are described as Human Interface
Device. Since this category includes mice, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to delete these subkeys as well.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm running Win XP Home SP1 / Pentium IV / 512MB RDRAM / nVidia GeForce 3 64MB RAM
