Mouse unplug causing problems?

If a PS/2 mouse is unplugged or plugged into a machine while the machine is on, can that cause the machine itself to malfunction besides not being able to use the unplugged item? Is this for keyboards as well?

The reason I ask is because I'm having trouble with a mouse hooked up to a kvm and I want to do some testing to find out what the problem is, but I don't want to be causing problems for the machines hooked up to the kvm.

Thanks

The only affect that I have ever witnessed with PS/2 mice and keyboards (including with KVM Switches) is only that single device not working. I have noticed a larger success of keyboards and mice continuing to work while using the KVM because it emulates a constant connection and the PC doesn't quite notice that nothing is plugged in.

Thank you, I tried it out and don't appear to be having any issues.

How about monitors - does that appear to cause any problems when you unplug/plug in a monitor when a machine is on? I know some machines won't boot w/o a monitor hooked up.

I've never seen that. I know most BIOS check for the presence of a keyboard, but not a monitor. Most of the time servers don't operate with a monitor hooked up or only a KVM hooked up. I don't see why since the feedback loops would be connected verifying that there is a cable (saying nothing of a powered monitor.) So it would be just like turning on a PC with the monitor turned off.

Wow! I was out of it yesterday - yes, I mixed up keyboards with monitors and I've seen problems with keyboards. Thanks for your input again.
