Exclamation My Windows OS Hangs..

My System hangs whenever I leave it idle for a few minutes... But not so every time. I've observed that this happens on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP ( though I've never seen this happen on my Linux installation - maybe 'cos I'm using it less these days ).

The mouse pointer doesn't move and keybord doesn't work and display gets still when that happens. The only option I get to use is to restart my system

I'm totally clueless on what the problem is! Please help!!!!

My guess is its something that you downloaded like screen saver like app such as SETI @home. Have you downloaded or installed anything new lately?

I've all the options turned to 'never' under power management. So that rules out any problem relating to standby.

and I've downloaded no program file as such recently. Only a few ebooks.

It sounds like you're computer is just locking up. It could be a lot of things: Virus, Spyware, Antivirus software, Bad Ram, Bad videocard, and so on down the line.

I would uninstall antivirus software and see if that helps, then go online to housecall.antivirus.com and scan your computer for viruses. If none of that helps it's time to start looking at the hardware. Also, get Spybot and check your computer for spyware.

this could be just a bad driver, just because you have the most recent, doesnt mean you have a good one. if you are overclocking this could be a problem, make sure all your bios settings are set to the hardware you have. voltages, and settings can be found on the web-sites for your hardware, might even want to check for firmware updates, bios updates, does your video card have bios that can be updated? do you get drivers from microsoft update site? they sometimes dont work as they should.how much ram do you have? can you give a rough list of your hardware setup?

I had a similar problem once come to think of it.

Try resetting your bios values to default and checking that there is nothing askew in there.

Reinstalling your OS doesn't guarantee that you got rid of a virus BTW. Some viruses get into the MBR and a simple format won't get rid of them. Many times you have to zero the drive to get rid of it.

Do you have antivirus software installed? If so, uninstall it and see what happens. Antivirus software is famous for causing problems.

I would check your video card next. Put in a new one, different chipset, different driver, etc. and see what happens.

It very well could be a motherboard problem. We had a lot of problems with the FIC AZ11 series of boards doing exactly what your computer is doing.

repaired, i use that as a excuse to buy a new one, when something starts going out on a board i just upgrade. usually when it has a problem and it gets "fixed" other things start to crop up, besides, if i have a momb long enough for it to go bad i need a new one anyhow.

I have a problem with my FIC AZ11 mother board as far as locking up when I have an up to date OS of Windows 2000 professional or Windows XP. If I do not up date the OS then the unit will not lock up. Unfortuanatly I will have security holes if I do not update. What problems did you find with the FIC AZ11 and what did you do to resolve them.
