Mysterious Unsolvable Computer Errors
The first part is a background of the problem. It is kind of interesting and tells some of what I have already tried although it is kinda long, so I condensed the problem again at the end.
First off I built my own AWESOME gaming computer and it was perfect until randomly one day it started having boot problems. Whenever I cold boot the computer everything starts running except the video isn't displayed. I have to wait almost exactly 30 seconds (no more no less) and press restart for it to boot successfully. This really bugged me I assumed it was the video card and so I tried a new one and it did the same thing. So then I thought maybe it was the PS because I got it with a case at Fry's and it only had 350W and at this time I realized I needed more wattage. So I ordered a new one with the best ratings. I would get the defective one that Fry’s my motherboard (or processor). So I sent it back and sent the motherboard and processor back to their respective manufacturers. They both sent them back saying there was nothing wrong with them. On a hunch from a friend I sent the motherboard back again and WHOOPS they screwed up the first time the motherboard was messed up. So they sent it back and everything was back to normal, except of course for the boot problem. So then a couple of weeks ago I began getting random memory errors, which I knew were most likely associated with a faulty PS. So today as I was contemplating which new PS to get the monitor went blank...the computer had shut off. I tried turning it back on...nothing . Then I smelt something burning and since no one was cooking anything I knew I was in trouble. I went to get a new PS with more wattage and plugged it in. Everything seemed to be back to normal (that is with the boot problem) . Then I found out that Splinter Cell: PT would crash and Windows was running slowly. So now I'm just fed up with trying to find the problem and I'm thinking of paying a professional to do it. And I don't want to pay someone to fix my computer so I need help. Here are my computers specs: - Tyan Tiger MP motherboard - One AMD Athlon MP 2400+ (I couldn’t afford another one at build time) - 512 MB Corsair DDR PC2100 - 512 MB Crucial DDR PC2100 - ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9700 128 MB - Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum - 10/100 Ethernet card - CenDyne DVD R/RW - Antec Mini-server case - Antec 400W PS (I had a 350W one before today) - Windows 2000 SP4 Here is the problem (in chronological order): - In order to cold boot I have to press the restart button approx. 30 sec. after power on. - Got new faulty PS that fried motherboard - Got motherboard fixed - Now have random memory errors - PS fails - Get new PS with more watts - Splinter Cell: PT doesn’t work well (even though it used to) - Windows is running slower I have had numerous people look at it and no one could find out how to solve any of these so I assume they are linked to one thing (emphasis on assume). Keep in mind that all of the major functions of the computer are operational and the only problems are the ones I mentioned. Thanks in advance for your help. ![]() |

It almost sounds like everything is overheating. The case that you have, does it have lots of ventilation on it and does every component, eg, chipset, motherboard, processor, video card have a fan on it... It also sounds like something might not be compatible with another component causing the video to not initilize...
For the boot problem, scan for viruses, reset the BIOS and maybe consider replacing the battery for the CMOS????? ![]() If not, then have fun with that... |

Hrmm... Once you can get it on, i'd reccomend going to www.download.com and getting SiSoftware's Sandra utility. Click CPU & BIOS Information and look at the Sensors section once it's done analyzing. It should say what temperature your CPU is at, which should help you fix the problem.
