New internal hard drive for laptop

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop which I bought in '00. I want to upgrade the harddrive to a 40gb hard drive. However, I'm not sure what the interface is. How can I find out for sure? It doesn't seem to say in the system documentation. Which internal hard drives will my laptop support?

(^^;?(All 2.5inch drives should be available, but the problem is its height.)

There are variations about 9mm to 12mm which must be apt for its place. In any ways you must remove the former drive, if you have a look at it in your hand, you would know whether it is alright or not in your hand or eyes. Besides this you'd better make sure that the bios version support the size of drive.
