No System Power

my cpu fan and video card are not getting any power, but my hard drive, power led, and hard drive (and the p/s fan) are getting power when i hit the switch on the p/s. I have both ATX motherboards and cases. All of the parts are new and i grounded myself everytime so static isnt the answer.

i get nothing on screen, and only power to the components listed above.

can anyone help me please?

(^~;?(Whole system should be specified first.)

That only a CPU fan doesn't spin means that thereabouts circuits would be corrupted. Once take it into pieces and build it into floppy boot minimum. If it fails, dash into the shop.

Could be your psu cannot provide enough power for all devices. Its happened to me a couple of times. One or more devices simply will not come on.

If your after building your pc from scratch it may be that you havent set the cmos jumper. With some boards it comes set in the "wipe cmos" positin.

Also the cpu fan and the graphics card both get primary power from the motherboard while the hard drive has a seperate line to the psu.

yea i checked that jumper and it appears to be ok

one thing i saw is that the new ATX p/s use a 20 pin power connector. It says in the m/b manual that "when the power button on the p/s is switched to on, the whole system will NOT turn on (perhaps meaning the cpu fan and video card). This is known as soft power. The whole system will have power when the front panel switch is momentarily pressed" (i'm assuming that means the power button).

did anyone ever have this problem before?

thanks for the previous replies

The hard disk will not power up untill the "full power" is actuivated by pressing the power switch on the front of the pc. "soft on" is a 5 volt current going into the motherboard. When the power button on the front of the pc is pressed this current is interuppted, this causes everything to fully "power up"

If ti is fully atx the hard driver should not be comming on when you switch the psu on at the back.

However with some older boards this will happen (i have a pc like that)

However if everything is new im guessing something is defective or you missed something.

Your best bet is probably to try a different motherboard.

i'm sure its not the m/b c/ the hard drive is spinning and the led lights are getting power. it must be a jumper i have placed incorrectly.

what is a m/b sw that is a wire attached to the case?

What do you mean?

I think if you havent managed to fix it by now you should probably get somone else to look at it. The fact that the cpu fan doesnt spin implies that there is a serious problem with the motherboard.

Sounds like one of four things (first two already mentioned above):

1. Defective Motherboard
2. Insufficient wattage provided by power supply
3. P1 connector not connected
4. Defective Power Supply (and/or possibly the external connections to the power supply)

as recommended, i got someone to look at it, and we made some progress. i now can get to the boot screen, but when i push the del button to get to proceed, nothing happens. When i hit the power button on the computer, lights on the keyboard blink, but then go out. i have tried several keyboards, and each keyboard does that same thing. the cpu (intel 2.0 ghz) does get recognized by the motherboard and i have 128 ddr ram installed.

how can i get past this boot screen?

It wont get past the boot screen without a working cpu. So either the cpu is broken or the motherboard is broken.
