Did you make a new user profile?

In XP your profile files (desktop, my documents, etc) are stored in c:\documents and settings\<profilename>

It can be due to virus. Format your system then check.

Just run safe mode and choose the profile and search the files.

You can use restore option to get back to the previous restore point. This might be due to the virus had crashed in to your system. If you had taken the backup it would be useful.
