Pc does nothing when I turn it on.

No singal to screen, screen is just blank, hard disk light goes on, but does not read and light stays on.

Is it a hard disk, motherbord or Graphics or memory or processor problem?

The system was runnig fine for a year and a half until last week.

Do you get post beeps? Also, check this thread: http://forums.devshed.com/showthrea...ard+and+problem there are some good general trouble shooting guidelines there.

So it does beep, but then no signal. Go through the steps in the thread I linked, and post back.

I'm nearly sure its the AMD Duron 1.3 processor, took it out of the motherbord and PC did the same thing when booting. Does this imply its blown?.

Do you have another motherboard to check in that computer, and with that cpu? I would suspect the mobo before the processor.

When I took off the heatsink the thermal pad was melted away, is this normal, do they need to be replaced often the computer is only 1 and 1/2 years old.

Processor does not look burnt.

I have no other mother board to check the processor on.

Yeah the pads that stick are supposed to melt over the heatpad on the CPU

did you install anything new, hardware, ram ect... did you get a bios update or service packs, does your motherboard have a easy bios updater? try the ram first, it usually does exactly what you describe even though it could be any number of other parts, also try using the cmos jumper to clear any customized settings in the bios , or remove the battery for a short time, see if that will make it boot.

You were right it was the motherboad, processor was alright.

But have run into another problem.

My Compaq recovery disk says i dont have a Compaq computer (because of ne no compaq motherbaoard) and XP won't run. Compaq said go buy a OEM version of XP, there is nothing we can do; its a Microsoft issue.

You only have a recovery disk, not an actual copy of xp? If so, you will have to obtain an actual xp disk.

I have a licence for XP bought from Compaq, but have no actual XP disk. I was on to microsoft they were much more helpful than Compaq, they said get name and details of the guy in Compaq who is trying to fob me off and they will deal with the issue.

Never thought Compaq were such a crap outfit, think HP own them now. Hope I never have to deal with them again.
