Hey,
When you remove the jumpers, by default, the HD will go by "Cable-Select", and by the sounds of this situation, that HD is dominant. Dont know why this problem occurs, sometimes hard drives conflict with each other, I just use separate IDE Channels to get around it.

Hope that helps!

Have you tried setting the jumpers to master on the drive, rather than just removing them altogether? Give it a shot.

The OS you are booting whould always be on Master anyway. Um...seing as you sadi you are new, you are putting it on the right IDE connector. The Cable runs out from the board, the first one is usually MASTER, unless marked otherwise, and the second connector, on the end is SLAVE!. That may be why your BIOS is not reading it as master!

yes Nic , my cables are fitted right, wat i'm more concern is tat ... can a slave run without a master.. if that kinda conditon can ever happen.. i dont have jumpers in my Hd, its on e very 1st cable connector(its labeled master), my slave . which is running down, which is e second cable(middle) connector,, and has no HD.,now.., and my last connector goes to my mobo. wat i want to know is.. Y is it showing as this

IDE Channel 1 Master: None << my main concern
IDE Channel 1 Slave: MAxtor HD << this is the HD i am booting my OS from... n its connected to e master cable ..wif no jumpers at e back.

IDE Channel 2 Master:CD-ROM
IDE Channel 2 Slave:None

thanks for replyin n helpin me out nic...

Cheers!

Hey,
A Slave CAN boot without a Master, maybe your mainboard is just faulty? try another cable, and see what that can do!

good luck!

Why don't you have jumpers on the back? Cable select is a finicky thing, you should set the jumpers to master manually.

This site has descriptions and pictures of the jumpers and such. Ignore the specifics about the drive, but the general idea is the same for any drive.

Write down the jumper settings on HDD and HDD model, so they can answer you more precisely. Though the problem may be automatically solved by reading well and starring at jumper pins for a pretty while.

(^^;?(I don't know what you are doing. But probably XP would be ditzy. Disk management seems to be pretty stupid intead of its magnificence)

Use Maxblast from Maxtor(They say this is that it is for.) or you may fdisk it by Win98 bootdisk.
