Proximity Sensor or Switch --- & maybe pc104

Hi,

I am searching for some material to build up a product.

I need a Proximity Sensor, I need to see if there is an object in an area distance of 2'' to 36'' approximatively.

I also need pc104 elements. I propably found those, but we never know !

I am trying to find distributors for those, all the ones I found are High Cost, I want something cheap so it can be replaced at a low cost, and that won't break after a small hit.

What type of "pc104 elements"? What are you trying to detect? That would greatly influence they type of sensor you're looking for.

I need to detect pallets on a fork-lift. Something solid, I just need to know if the fork-lift is travelling in the warehouse with a pallet or not.

I need a pc-104 that have 2 port rs232, and usb. It's also have to communicate with a server via wireless network. Will be running a little applications under a version of windows (haven't choosed with one yet).
That's what I see for the moment.

proximity sensors

Although it will require an A2D converter, the Sharp IR sensors (GP2D12) are excellent. I think I have attached the data sheet

What exactly is a A2D converter ?

I know it's related to tv, screen etc... so it's related to display, but I don't see the function of it ?

thank you

A2D = analog to digital converter. The sensor mentioned put out an analog signal the need to be digitized to be able to use it with a computer. There are however varieties on this sensor that put out a digital signal that is 0 if nothing is there and a 1 if something is there.
