random freezing of PC

I posted a few weeks ago w/ a PC that wouldn't power up. After replacing the PS, mobo, and memory, the new CPU (AMD) got 'er back up and running.

How, it boots, I log in (W2K) and it will run for a while and then freeze - no mouse, kbd, can't ctrl-alt-del and have to use the soft boot button. Also occurs when dual booted to Linux. I pulled the USB devices, and speakers and same problem. I only have a video card so I'm at a loss as to where to go from here.

Thanks for any help!

Could be heat, check the heatsink and fan to be sure you have good contact, the heatsink is attached solidly, and the fan is working.

Dave, thanks for the reply. Yes, all fans are working. Also, yesterday my graphics card looked like it wasn't working. I decided to replace the graphics card for a PCI card and wire around my kvm switch. Worked great when I rebooted until I began the "new hardware" wizard and it froze again.

I reinstalled the old card, removed all ASB, sound, & printer cables and rebooted and the old card worked just fine but it froze again about 2 min after rebooting. Nothing in event log - ugh.

Any suggestions to look for in the mobo setup?

Thanks for any ideas!

Do you have motherboard monitor or similary software, so you can actually see what temps you're getting? Are you overclocking? Try resetting the bios using the jumper on the mobo (look in the manual). Does the freeze/shutdown occur if you leave it in bios (don't boot into windows)?

This is an Asus A7V8X-X mobo and from what I read, the BIOS needed to be updated to v1009. I flashed and still same problem. No changes to BIOS settings - everything auto. I'm reading lots of troubles w/ this board - seems to be hot-and-cold. Some swear by it and some (like me) swear at it. It also freezes in BIOS.

Thanks again.

If the board is only a few weeks old, take it back

I found similar problems with it freezing, make sure you DO NOT have Hyper-Threading turned on anywhere. Unless you are running Windows XP, your OS does not support HT Technology.
