reformatted C:, now D: doesn't show up
We formatted our C: drive and now our D: drive does not show up anywhere. Have checked the cables and the drive is vibrating, so I assume it is spinning. This happened last time the C: drive was formatted and we ended up buying a new (used) D: drive. Since it has happened again now I am suspiscious that it is not a hard drive failure after all, but something I can't figure out.

I am running Windows 98 and the system is in Swedish but I have worked quite a bit with computers so I hope that will not get in the way!

I can't, only the C: drive shows up to scan. Its like the D drive doesn't exist.

I get an error box that translates into something like "Scandisk can not be run on this drive. It may be a network or CD ROM drive. Run scandisk again but provide another drive specification"

How about going to the drive manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostics for the drive.

They all have a free downloadable utility

OK. So. I downloaded the only utility I could find on the manufacturer's site and ran that program. It didn't actually say anywhere that it would reformat my D:!! I've got it available now but its completely empty. Since our CD-Burner quit working last week the D: had our entire backup and now it is lost. Now I am very frustrated and shall leave the whole thing alone.

curious, are the drives one the same ide cable, if so what are the jumper settings?
also to future readers, most drive diagnostics are a format , low level packet writing is a foramt that erases the disk to a raw state. have to really pay attention to which choice you make.

It's your juper issue. If you just replaced your D: you need to reset your jumper to be slave; your C: will be master.

the jumper cables are ok. Last week the C: and D: drives worked fine, the jumper settings were good and we never altered them. I checked them a couple times and they were still correct so this is not the problem.

We still have the first harddrive that this happened to too, we haven't accidently formatted that one. So it still has all the data intact I assume. It would be very very good if we could get this one to work. I have hooked it up and the jumper settings were double-checked and it still doesn't show up when I start the machine.

Is there any solution at all to this?

I have both hooked up on the same IDE cable

have you tried connecting the D: drive on another pc? can you see it in the BIOS?
