Removable hard drive bay.
EIDE, the standard 7200rpm drives ...
I have several hard drives from abandoned computers I still need to access data from, time to time, and would like to put in a removable hard drive bay to accomodate this and also to use it for backup and archiving. Is anyone using one that they are happy with (make, model) and also anyone using one that they are unhappy with (malfunctioning, akward, whatever). ? I don't want the ability to swap live. I'd power down to do any changes, I just hate breaking out the screwdriver and reconnecting the ribbons every time ... and it's worth a few hundred bucks to come up with a good backup system where I can swap out from the front of the case. |

Removable Hard Drive Racks (Mobile Rack)
RE: Mobile racks.
I have been using racks for years. They have one drawback. The cable is so short that after a few changes, they (Cables)separate. I got tired of replacing the connecters. So, I found a cheap outlet and I now have 8 racks. I have a different HD and operating system in 5 of them. One I use as a identical backup for my main hard drive. In the 7th one, I replaced the short cable for a 19" ata cable. I extended the power cord to about 16". I filed a groove in the front of the rack so when it is installed, the cables stick out the front. I can diagnose, format and fix my friends hard drives by connecting it on the desk top. When I am finished, I re-insert my hard drive. I have the 8th rack for "Just in case". I found the cheapest price's on the Price grabber site. I spent less than $70.00 on the whole stock of racks. At the present, I am teaching unemployed people how to use a computer. I swap the racks out so my students will have experience with several operating systems to accommodate their new jobs. Hope this helps David |

there are many cases out there now that have (almost) screwless moutings. usually they have some nifty slide and lock mechanism that you can just flip a switch and pull a lever and the drives will just come popping out of place. and i've worked on such a case that was only like 20-30 dollars, so they can come pretty inexpensively. this would be a good alternate solution.
