Routers- which is best?
Hi all,
I'm thinking of buying a router, definately wireless but also one I can connect my PS2 to. So far these are my choices: Netgear DG834G Belkin Thomson SpeedTouch 570 Any recomendations? Oh and it has to work with AOL. |

ive got a netgear router and i would recommend them, they are excellent imo. Mine is not a wireless one but should i require a wireless one in the future i would certainly look for a netgear (but would also give linksys a chance too ! i set a linksys wireless g router up for someone and it was very easy to work with !)
Hope that is of help

Thanks that helps but I''m not sure if linksys routers work with AOL, you need an ethernet modem I think and AOL provides a USB one.

I have a belkin wireless and a linksys wired and a generic switch.
I currently have the linksys at my cable modem, and I used to have the switch dangling off of that, now it's the wifi. My linksys has never played nicely with any switches or routers dangling off of it. I get connection drops and often reduced bandwidth vs being directly off of the linksys. (Sometimes as low as %10 normal when only one computer connected.) The belkin wireless works great so far but I've only been using it 4 days. -MBirchmeier

It's not the easiest to do, but this can be done:
If you set up your computer as a server you can connect it directly to the AOL modem Set up your computer as a gateway You can then plug the wan port of the router into the computer. Plug all other computers into the router. It requires that the one computer be on for anyone to access the net, but it works. -MBirchmeier |

I can't resist, but we are discussing hardware in the lounge ... I'd take a look at the Makita RF1101

For those keeping score at home...
I find it ironic that i'm hardwired with my work laptop to my router (due to some recent hardware failures) and remote desktoping over to my desktop, which is connected wirelessly to my router. -MBirchmeier |

That is kinda ironic, 2 good views for netgear so I'm definately going with them.
