SATA Speed Of the Bypassed DMA Controller...
According to the sites that I have read, the speed of SATA bypassing the DMA controller is about 150mb/s. ATA can get up to 133mb/s, So there wouldn't be to much of a gain in transfer speeds would there? Am I wrong on this?
Also is the DMA controller located in the chipset? |

Both of those speeds are maximums, neither technology will reach those numbers consistently (if they will at all). It is indeed true that you get only a minor speed boost from sata over the older pata drives (at least until SATA2...) That said, since SATA and PATA drives cost about the same, the cabling alone is worth using SATA, it makes for a much cleaner setup.
And yes, the dma controller is in the chipset.
