Question Screen resolution/Color issues

undefinedEver since I re-loaded Windows 98SE after my hard drive issue, I can only use 2 colors or 16 colors, as well as only operate in 640x480. I have always been able to use a better resolution and High color. I didn't switch monitors, so I know it's not that. Right now, I have no other options to use, and my screen supports 800x600 (I believe that's the exact resolution). I can't even use some of the programs I need without having the correct color setting. What should I do?

After OS re-install, you have to re-install all your drivers, video drivers in this particular case, but also modem, audio etc...

Some of your systems will run fine with the default drivers, but even those which are working should have the "correct" drivers installed.

After you install the drivers that came with the hardware, think about going to the various manufacturers websites for updated drivers. Don't forget to re-update your windows too, and any other software you use (flash and other non-microsoft plug-ins/apps) After all this, remember to delete all temp files (disk cleanup) and run a defrag to tidy up your system and improve performance.

I'm still trying to get all of my drivers (which sucks b/c most places I find are charging for them!!) Does this have anything to do with it?

The following file is missing or corrupted. SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS
There is an error on your CONFIG.SYS file on line 4

"" "" "" "" "" "" "" ""SB16\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS
"" "" "" "" "" "" "" ""Line 5

"" "" "" "" "" "" "" "" SB16\MTM\MTMCDAI.SYS
"" "" "" "" "" "" "" "" Line 6

This came up while Windows was loading (has been since OS was reinstalled).

Hmmm ... no one I know of charges for drivers. In fact, I hardly ever keep track of the ones that came with my hardware. If I need them I just go to the manufacturer website and I always find a recent version.

The only thing you really should need in this case is the driver for your video card. Identify this card (Make and Model) and chances are I or some other passerby can locate the site to download the drivers from. You should not need any "tools" they bundle with the cards, only the drivers! The drivers should be <100kb and very simple to download and install.

Thats a problem with your sound blaster sound card drivers. Try to uninstall then reinstall them. I agree that you shouldn't be paying for drivers, be sure you are looking in the right place. What graphics card do you have?
