Simultaneous Component Failure- Advice
My system suddenly stopped and could not be turned on again (ie was dead). I figurted this was power supply failure, but was told by hardware supplier that the power supply, motherboard(ASUS),primary hard drive and 2nd hard drive (used for backup) are all gone. Both drives could not be powered up after replacing motherboard and power supply ! The system was connected to surge protector and there was no electrical storm, etc.
Is this possible ? It is very disconcerting that backup hard drive is also functionally wiped out Would greatly appreciate any opinions on this. Stuart |

(^^;(Oh! Poor Stuart!)
What a tragedy you are in! Very sad to say, it is not unthinkable. For instance, if you connect the cable(power-supply included) upside-down to 2.5inch IDE, it would be dead(but not always). In this case, the sacrifice is one drive only. But if somewhere critical on the mainboard is shorted, whole things completely damaged is possible. However, if you put the each device into another PC, that it may be recognized is also thinkable. But the mainboard is absolutely unrelyable. |

Find a working machine, or get a working machine by using a fresh hard drive then once the operability of said machine is verified insert your supposed dead hard drive into fully functional machine (as a slave).

Probably told you you'd need a new mousepad, too, eh? |

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I think this is for real (I am not being cheated on the hardware) since it was all on warranty (at week 51 of the 52 weeks !) and the vendor is replacing the motherboard, power supply, and both hard drives without charge.
Have any of you ever heard of such a disaster ? (I have not but vendor claims he has seen it multiple times stuart |

(^^;(Oh! Then you are the luckiest man of the worsts.)
I Haven't heard of it, about all I have was in the early days. Even in such a case, It was uncertain that all the devices was damaged. Generally speaking, No accident wihtin 2 weeks go to 1 year, that within 1 year go to 2 year, and that within 2 year go to 3 or 5 years. Then 2 weeks or 3 month warranty or so is probably for HDD or so. However, Your-like accident is not assumed, possibly, because they don't want to replace all the devices. In addition, each parts is to be send back to the each maker, for in this case, HDD makers are irresponsible for it. I suppose. |
