Sony DVD writer not writing...

I just got a Sony DWU-18A and it's not writing anything. It plays DVD's & CD's fine yet when I try and copy a disc or write a data disc I get coasters. When writing a disc the light on the drive does not come on at all, yet I get a 'The burn process was successful' message. What's going on? Any ideas?

No I've not tried Sony media, I figured I should be able to use any brand of disc...?

I tried using a different program to Nero - CopytoDvd. When writing with this program the light actually came on and again gave a 'Burn successful' message. But once again, the disc reads as blank.

(^^;(Yes, I also figures I should be able to use any brand of discs.)

But Sony usually seems to figure we should be able to use any sony brand of discs as well as other Sony products. A good example is Vaio. So much so that, they wouldn't have done enough tests on another brands.

I don't say it's only a cause, but you may try one Sony brand not to produce more coasters. Apart from this, CD or DVD-R actually have compatibility and RW has more.

Beside this changing disks, Some Burner Programme has "Confirm Data Option"<Burn4free>(^^;(I haven't checked it yet, because it burns well for freeware)

If it says "Burn Successful", suspectful may be a closing process.

Well, I've finally gotten the drive to create a disc that actually works. I haven't changed a thing yet it's suddenly started working...! Thanks for your help.

(^^;(In any way, well done for you.)

Probably, trifling rotation contortion or rotation speed would cause this also. I hope the coaster should be printed Marylin Monroe or something on it.

sony dvd burners have this irritating habit of spewing out a few (4-15) coasters before burning dvds satisfactorily.

i went through 17 of them. i have a replication business. so try to bur some normal 700mb cds before burning costly dvds.

(~~;(What a terrible story, though as was expected.)

Then, after spewing out, how long it keeps burning?
