Question strange cd/dvd drive problem

about 1 1/2 months ago i had winME and a dvd drive. for no apparent reason my dvd drive was no longer read by the computer. so i went and purchased a cd drive and upgraded to winXP. today it happened again. now my cd drive is not read by the computer anymore... it opens and closes and the lights gone on and off, but its not being read (this happened with both my dvd and cd drive...)

i am seriously doubting that both drives just broke... and i also doubt it is a virus because ever since i upgraded to winXP i have not had connection to the internet (this is a friends computer)

anyone know what could be wrong???

No one knows.

After upgrade still same? No any improvement?

What have you done so far to fix them? Cleaning? Any Media? Proper driver condition? Attached to other PC? Firmware available? Which Manufacturer?

If virus do this, why don't you try Win98fd or 1fd Linux with CD-ROM support?

Why haven't you tried clean install, if you doubt virus and with such a defect?

I'd agree with guitarboy, try another power connecotr, and see is you BIOS even sees it, that will determine if its a problem with the drive, or just the OS!
