system freezes then doesn't reboot

I'm working on a computer that has freezes up after 5-6 minutes. I try to restart it but I get no video and it doesn't finish the POST, no beeps, no error codes. The system contains a amd 900mhz cpu, 128 memory, windows me, 250 watt power supply. I have replaced the motherboard, memory, and heat sink. I tried a new power supply and a video card that I know works on an older machine. I tried running memtest but the system froze each and every time at 6:04. I have to wait 1-2 hours before I get any video output. Otherwise, I hear the hard drive spin and it stops there. Other information I have gathered is that the pc had previous electrical problems that were fixed and that the pc sat near a cat box. Lots of gritty sand dust inside. Also, the system has been freezing for about 2 months. Could the processor have gone bad? I'm very frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi gbares,

How about the CPU fan? Is it spinning? Did you replace it when you replaced the heatsink? Did you blow out the machine with a can of compressed "air"?

Tom

I replaced the cpu fan and used compressed air. Also, I took out everything non electrical down with a static free cloth. I then disconnected the the cd drive and pulled out the modem and network card. I wanted a bare system.

Did you use heatsink compound between the CPU and heatsink?

Any chance the processor has been overclocked?

Have you checked the power supply voltages in CMOS setup?

Have you tried leaving the cover off and blowing a household fan on the motherboard?

Tom

I'll try those things next. Thanks for the ideas. I think I might start from scratch and see what I can do with the bare minimum of components installed. I just can't seem to pinpoint the problem. I appreciate all of the ideas.

Hi, Could u help me ... I am facing the below problem ...

Hi All,

Few weeks back, when I was working on my PC, suddenly the screen froze. I was not able to do any thing, mouse kbd did not work, I was forced to restart my pc.

But then, there was no display and my monitor kept blinking. The processor fan is spinning. I tried replacing my processor with another one, and i got the display.

Hence I concluded that the problem was with the processor and got a new one and installed. It was working for the past 10 days and yesterday I faced the same problem - screen froze.

Could any body help me out from this ... could this be a voltage problem?

Thanx in advance for ur reply.

Shanky
