System reboots/shuts down unexpectedly
Hi everyone,
I recently build a new computer and I have been getting this problem. Every single time I use the computer, the system either reboots itself or powers off suddenly. I have already checked the Device Manager and it shows that no devices are in conflict. I have also left the system turned on thru the night without any problems, until I woke up and started surfing the net, then the same thing happens again, the system just turns off by itself. I have reinstalled the XP Operating systems and I still get the same problem.I also came across a software problem listed at http://forums.devshed.com/showthrea...tem+information Can anyone guide me on where to start troubleshooting? |

I used to have this problem when I used cheap/non-brand name RAM. Once I got some Kingston, I never had such reboots again.
Although, another possibility is that you could be getting a BSOD or stop error, except it's just restarting instead of telling you the error. In the System properties in the control panel, find the advanced tab and click settings. If "Automatically restart" is checked, uncheck it. Then, at least you'll get more information about what exactly went wrong.

This is the stuff I had.
A intel P4 1.8(A) chip. A GA-8S648FX gigabyte motherboard. A 3D Prophet 9200 graphics card. A kingston 512Mb RAM. A Quantum Fireball harddisk. A CD-RW. Hope this information might be able to help. I have already checked but I don't think I need to change any pin settings on the motherboard. Am I right? Hope so... ![]() |

Check the "Auto restart" setting. I had that happen on my Fiance's newer Vaio Desktop and after we unchecked it, we found a program was causing an error, removed the program and it has actully worked ever since.

I have found that some system boards tend to hold static on their copasitors which can cause power issues including system randomly reboots. It isn't the only cause but can be one of the causes of this issue. To fix this type of issue try Removing all power from system and press the power button 5 times and then hold it in for 15 seconds. If this does not help then it could be windows registry issue, ram issue, power supply, or sys board. This procedure fixed my desktop and it is goingo on 6 months without a reboot.
