Time for a new PSU?
My 400W PSU has been w/ me for ~1 year. just today my computer has shut itself down from me turning the fan off, rebooted 3 times without notice, warning. is this a sign that my PSU is dying or that its weak?

i have 3 harddrives, 1 cdrom, a fx5900xt, and a 3.0ghz northwood

Maybe! However, remove 2 HDD and introduce hardware monitor apt for your chip and run memtest also.
