I know this is possible through Lan Wake, but is there another way?
Thanks.

Depending on your motherboard, you can wake a computer from LAN/Modem activity, keypress on keyboard, mouse movement or button-press, or at a fixed time (normally called rtc alarm (rtc=real-time clock)). All these settings will be found in Power Management section of the BIOS.

If you want something more remote, how about an RF (not IR, that needs line-of-sight) key-fob (as for car alarms/remote locking), you should be able to buy a set with key-fob and receiver from electronics store, and hook up the receiver to a motorised cradle/device (how's your electronics/DIY skill? ) to move the mouse or press a key or even send a trigger voltage to a LAN port (needs quite a bit of knowledge for that), so you'll be able to switch on the computer from outside, when you are getting out your keys to open your door, having the computer on and ready for you once you get in the house.

Hope this helps.

I'd go for a well trained dog ... ours has figured out how to use a door handle, so I could probably get her to nose the power button on command. Then get the dog a cell phone, and simply call the dog and ask her to turn it on. A child would work, too, but they aren't as reliable and the phone would always be busy.

Actually the RF might be a good solution but you didn't specify how remote you will be in relation to the computer.

possibly out side of a network.

Most common and similar scenario would be i would be in another building outside of the firewall, connecting to computer inside my company through VPN. The power to the computer would be off and I would need to power it back on.

Possible? by just sending some sort of network signal? with no extra hardware as mentioned?

My personal favorite option is to just never have your computer shut down.

Question Turning on Laptop remotely

Hi,
I also have a similar problem..I need to turn a laptop on/off remotely. To the solution suggested by someone, I cannot leave the laptop on for ever..I need to shut it down intermittently. One thing that I heard of is something called boot from lan. But I guess the laptop needs to be in standby mode for that. Does anybody have any info?
Can this be possible through external keyboards/mice? By remotely, I do not mean from other room. Its just that the laptop will be closed inside a cabin, and I would be using it through external keyboard and monitor just outside the cabin.

Thanks
Pannag
