USB hard drive, are they all slow ?

I just got a usb hard drive and copied some of my large files to it, and noticed it was taking a really long time to finish. Im not sure what kind of throughput im getting but it cant be much. Its taking somewhere around 15 min to copy a 700MB file.

Is the USB drive a USB 2.0? Does your computer support USB 2.0? Is the USB drive connected through a USB hub? If so, is the hub 2.0?

I have 2 usb external harddrives, a 250gb and a 300gb, and they both are pretty fast... faster than your describing. If I remember correctly, they were almost as fast as copying to the internal drive.

What kind of usb drive you have? and usb 1.1? or 2?

Its an IO Magic 80 GB, with usb 2.0 and my computer is usb 2.0 also. No hub. I think its actually going faster than windows is telling me when it first starts copying the files over.

If you are transferring 700MB in about 15 minutes, this works out about 0.7MB per second which is extremely slow. How many USB devices do you have connected ?

i have a 1.2tb USB2.0 storage array. i get 10-18 mbps average, and peaks of upto 30 mbps.

your usb subsystem may not be the problem.

if you have multiple physical harddrives, try copying the same file from HDD0 to HDD1, and note the time. now, copy from HDD0 to USB and note the time. and copy from HDD1 to USB and note the time.

    please post them here.

    what motherboard are you using?
    what OS are you using?

There is always the possibility of there not being enough power to power all drives and USB connections, hence the slow data transfer.

the ext HDD, does it take external power, or does it run from the USB power only?
