Wanted: Opinions about Zip Disk Technology
Zip disks seem to be an enhanced version of the average floppy disk. I am considering Zip disk technology as an addition to my computer's existing storage technology.
What do you think about the Zip disk technology? Is it reliable? Is it fast and quiet to use? How does it compare to other storage technologies? |

zip disks are more precisely made than floppy disks, so the head can move closer to the surface. this allows for smaller blocks and so more space for storage.
I'd go for CD's (or possibly DVDs) though, they are far more commonly used and have far superior data integrity. One of those USB pen drives might be another option. Just plug it into your usb port and it is like having another hard drive (only smaller). |

I think ZIP is old technology. CD and, to a slightly lesser degree, DVD, are almost in every contemporary PC. If you burn onto CD/DVD you can read it on other PC's. If you burn ZIP, not many people have ZIP. CD/DVD is cheaper and better.
I just got a 128 meg USB2.0 pen drive for $30. It's great. I transfer big files (5 meg) between home and work with it. It works great with WinXP and Win2000. My choices for storage, in order of preference: 1. CD-ROM burner 2. USB pen drive 3. DVD burner 4. ZIP |

Agreed. I don't see the point of zip drives when cd-r and usb pen drives are so cheap.

Alright, so maybe I'll stick with CD-RW's as my means of removable storage. I just thought that maybe ZIP disks would be more reliable. I mean, it's not like you can really harm the disc itself very easily, since it's inside that thick container -- right?

I dunno, I have dozens of zip disks I haven't touched since the advent of the CD Burner. The last time I tried to read one it worked, but I would say it is just as destructable as a CD-R. If you dropped both onto a concrete floor I would reckon the CDR would actually fare better. Ditto with spilled coffee.
I wouldn't even consider using zip disks when you can but 100 CDRs for like $20 and a drive to burn them with for about $75. |
