what are possible reasons for a computer crashing

I'm posting here as i suspect it could be a hardware issue

this is what happened:

we were working offline - a few programs were open and suddenly the whole system crashes as if there had been a power failure of some kind but it wasn't that as the monitor and keyboard were still as they were - i tried to turn the machine on and... nothing - i went to the back of the case turned it off and on there - back to the front - turned it on - she fires back up and during the process of Windows (xp) checking files she goes and crashes again - after that i rebooted and skipped the file checking bit and that's about where we are at the minute.

what happened ?

I've had this system running without any serious hitches for about six months now

Were you running any new programs for the first time, installing software, or anything from a CD or floppy? Apart from that, maybe a faulty PSU (Power Supply Unit).

(^^;?(I don't know what happened truely.)

Make sure whether it can boot from FD or CD correctly for the moment.

Then check HDD by powermax, etc..

Then repair XP.

no can't say i was doing anything out of the ordinary - could be the power supply - i'm presently downloading 'powermax' to check the HDD following Megumi's suggestion.

thanks for the feedback

Jack
