    Laptop memory: worth the upgrade?

I have an older Compaq Presario R3000 running XP SP3. It has 2 memory slots. One is pretty much permanent by design and is a 256MB slot. The back side of the board has an easy access panel where the 2nd 256mb slot is. I can upgrade the one to a max of 1024MB. Sooo does anyone feel that it's worth $40 to upgrade from 512MB to 1256MB of DDR1 ram? The laptop is about 8 years old so I hate sinking another penny into it but it really runs good and I've yet to have problems with it... *KNOCKS ON WOOD*. Would adding a gig of memory help with old school DDR1 as much as it does with the DD2 and 3 stuff?

You will most likely see noticeable improvement if you upgrade from 512mb to 1gb-ish of memory. Usually you get very good improvement up to 1gb, then pretty improvement up to 2gb. From there on you probably won't see much improvement in individual programs, although you'll see an overall improvement if you run really memory intensive programs or run a lot of programs.

Id say its not worth spending any money on it, but you usually can get older memory for free from someone you know or some old pc you find.

I just upgraded a 5 year old Dell 9100 from 512mb to 1gb, and in xp sp3 the performance gain was considerable.

Why couldn't a dell 9100 with an adequate graphics card and sufficient memory run SIMSII?

Just as an update, I went against Crucial's recommended memory because it was twice as much as what I found online. I ended up buying two 1GB sticks but my laptop didn't like the brand I bought. I run one of the 1GB sticks in the expansion slot but if I run the other 1GB stick in the main RAM slot it blue screens and locks up all the time. Moral of the story, follow what Crucial says will work with your brand. I did notice a very slight improvement going from 512MB to 1.25GB if anyone else is curious about this.
