Master and Slave; building computer with old parts

    Hello,

I am trying to build a computer with some old parts I have around. I have two hard disks and a DVD drive, all with IDE connector.

I was wondering, how should I connect then them?

Hard Disk (where OS is installed) : IDE2 (Master)
Hard Disk (for backups) : IDE2 (Slave)
    CD Drive: IDE3 (Master)

    Or

Hard Disk (where OS is installed) : IDE2 (Master)
Hard Disk (for backups) : IDE3 (Master)
    CD Drive: IDE3 (Slave)

    ?

IDE1 seems to be used by floppy drive.

    Depends what you use most.
The two most used devices should be set as master, one on each IDE.

In your description, i would probably go with first settings. (CD as master).

Hello, thank you for your reply.

If I set one hard disk as Master and the other hard disk as slave on the same IDE channel then will data transfer be any faster compared to if I set one hard disk as Master on one IDE channel and the other hard disk as Master on the other IDE channel?

Devices placed on the same IDE cable will share the speed.

In theory, it will be faster to copy data from one master (IDE2) to another master (IDE3), compared to on the same cable (master vs. slave), as both cable will then have full use of the speed.

How much you will notice is probably limited and depends at the activity among the devices and rest of the system configuration.
