CPU fan causing more noise than usual
About half a year ago, I bought a HP Pavilion Media Center PC. The fan has always been so quiet, that you can hardly hear it, but just recently the fan grew excessively loud. It starts out quiet at BIOS, but once vista loads it grows extremely loud, almost as loud as my e machine, which is almost 5 years old. I tried cleaning it, but this didn't help at all. Can someone please help me here?

Replace it now. Quick!
or you will be replacing the CPU soon.
Just go to your local Frys and get a replacement. Don't get the cheapest one, spend a little money. A fan that costs $8 is a ton more reliable and more quiet than a $3 one.
You can also get them from the usual web vendors.
Or buy something like a Zallman

I agree.

But it sounds like HP should be replacing their shoddy $0.10 fan.

Yes, but if your time is worth anything, fighting with HP is not gonna be worth it. And if they do replace it, it will be another ten cent fan.

Just so long as it doesn't void any warranty so you can still get your $0.25 memory sticks replaced when those fail :-)

Ok, I'll buy a new fan right away. It was probably pretty crappy to begin with, since its the HP default fan. Thanks for the input.
