Server placement?

Hi:

RIght now I have a new Fedora Linux server running in my room. My dad will not let me put it in my basement, because of all the dust, and space, plus he says I have like 4 or 5 fans, so air circulation won't be a problem. But I absolutely cannot sleep when it's on. I have a closet that I could put it in, is that ok? I could always leave the door a couple inches open so air gets through. It's just that it's extremely loud, and there's 3 blue color light fans, and it's really annoying. Any suggestions of where I should put my server would be really helpful!!! Thanks again!!!

Ken Cooper

As long as you have some space around the case, and its not a completely enclosed area, it doesn't really matter where you put the server, though cooler ambient temp is generally desirable. The closet should be fine.

It would be best if the unit can be in an air-con environment....

It prevents burn outs and pro-longs the lifespan of it too....

Thanks for your responses. I guess that's my only place. I wish I could have it air conditioned, but I don't have one available. Just for the future, is there something like an air conditioner that doesn't need to be outside a window, that cools the air like it? Thanks for your responses!!!!!!

Anything that cools a space has to have an exhaust to outside. It doesn't magically cool the air, the heat has to go somewhere, and since the machine isn't 100% efficient, it produces more heat than it removes from the air. Thus, if you ran an air conditioner as a standalone in a room with no vent, it would actually heat up overall. You don't have to vent to the actual outdoors, but you do need to vent to some space other than where you are trying to cool.
