Some instructions can be found at http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm how ever though it is always the safe to do it by how the vendor suggest you go about applying it.

I applied some heatsink compound in the center of the heat spreader and evened it out from corner to corner...
but now my p4 3ghz runs hotter on Asus p4p800 delux than it used to on my old Intel 865 gbf board...by almost 4 to 5 C.
I'd carefully removed all previous material tht came with the heatsink.
What is the proper way to go about applying the thermal material? Shud i just leave it on the center of the heat spreader and fit the sink so that it gets spread by teh pressure??

The site Kreston.e posted has good instructions. Be sure you have good quality thermal paste (like arctic silver) and that the paste and heatsink make good contact.
