Unhappy Celeron to Mobo problem

Dell GX110
Has a PIII sticker, yet it only runs on Celeron. Came with an 800mhz intel. I picked up a SL6VQ 1100 celeron and tried it several months ago. The mobo would not post. Eventually I got the 800 celeron to start working again, but cannot remember how I did it.
I bought a 1000mhz celeron and wanted to check it out. It worked fine. I went to put the 800 back in and installed the 1100 by mistake. Now that I put the 800 or 1000 back in I can't get a post and I cannot remember how I fixed it last time. Pulled battery, disconnected peripherals, etc.
Any suggestions?
Why is this 1100 chip giving me problems in the first place? What is so different about it? Is this chip bad and if so could it cause problems on the mobo?

Hi puter tutor and welcome to Dev Shed.

If this cpu was not suitable for the motherboard, then you could have damaged the motherboard. Never insert a CPU into a mobo without consulting the mobo manual to ensure that they are compatible with each other.

What make/model of motherboard do you have ?
