Unhappy cpu won't run at default speed

I have an amd athlon 1ghz cpu that won't run at any speed higher than 600mghz without freezing when loading windows. if I set the cpu to any higher speed windows will fail to load and I just get a blank screen. at the current speed I am unable to use any opengl or d3d applications without my computer freezing. my voltage is correct I've checked about everything I can think of....any help or ideas would be great, I'm close to throwing it out and buying a whole new mobo and cpu.

Did it work before? How are you changing the speed?

    yes, it did work before
I'm underclocking it using a nice little feature on my motherboard that lets me change the multiplier. (100x6) is what its at right now. I have an Epox 8K7A+ as my motherboard. the underclocking is done manually on a small switch on the mobo, not in the bios.

    So you're saying it was 100 x 10 originally? I've no idea exactly what cpu you're using but could it've been 166 x 6 ?

I would think it was originally 100x10, that was the setup of the first 1ghz athlons.
So it originally worked at 100x10, you dropped it to 100x6, and now putting it back to 100x10 doesn't work? You have the voltage at its original stock setting of 1.8v, and changed nothing else when you underclocked originally?

yes the original clock was (100x10), I have not changed the voltage since it worked everything has stayed the same, one day it just started freezing when I turned on my computer, when it would happen a high pitched noise would come from my computer. somehow I got the genius idea of underclocking the cpu, at first it was only down to 900mghz then I had to take it down to 850 and so on, it just kept getting worse. maybe its just dieing?

Try switching your ram with some that you know is good. If that doesn't help, I think your cpu is dying, and its time to upgrade.

I'm just gonna assume that its dying, really don't want to mess with it anymore. Think its about time for an upgrade anyway. Thanks for your help.
