I am currently having an i5 processor but I have to say that I am not impressed with it while doing multitasking it's speed is not what I expected even though I have 8GB of RAM.
You should try i7 because I have heard good things about it.

    i7

i7 is way better than i5

I personally recommend AMD , they are good for what they do, mostly as gaming processors.

If you are not gaming, then stick with the cheapest, the price different doesnt match the performance gain between any processors in this generation.

Personally I'd go for AMD. I'm more of a practical guy. Plus it really depends on how you use your computer.

i7 is definitely the best, but it's expensive. IMO you get the most bang for your buck from the i5.

i3 is fine for entry-level usage.

depends if by upgrade you mean want to change your motherboard or not? your core2Duo is going to be socket 775, the i3/i5 are socket 1155 and the i7 1155/6 & 1366 so you cant put any of those in your current motherboard, all you can do is try and get a high end used c2Quad

if you change your mobo you will more likely than not have to change your RAM since all current boards are DDR3 apart from a few (best avoided) transition boards.
