    P4 2.4 ghz Overclocked @ 2.7 ghz??

    Hey guys,
I tried overclocking a while ago and fried my hard drive but I am trying it again. I have been holding off getting a new cpu because its not really worth it. But I have heard that I should be able to get ~3 ghz. I can only get it to 2.7 though. If i try to get it to 2.8 the computer hangs.

    I have:
    P4 2.4 ghz northwood 18x multiplier (F Family)
    ASUS P4S333
    512 mb RAM

Right now I have the voltage to Auto and the RAM ratio to 4:5 and FSB = 150. What can I do or does anyone else have experience with a 2.4ghz P4. I have seen a 2.4 ghzC HT OC'ed to 3.6ghz. I dont expect anything like that but half of that would be nice?

    Any thoughts?

oh boy, first not all cpu are created equal. My 2.6 does 3.6. Your Ram is killing you. Even when you run at the lowerest divider. If you get some DDR400 or higher you will be able to OC alot further. Also you can raise the volts up to 1.7 don'ot go higher then that.

Ok so I need better RAM. Last night I went up to about 3 ghz (the most that my mobo will let me go) and upped the voltage to between 1.65 and 1.70 and I could get to the boot screen once in a while but then it would crash.

PS. How do you have OS X on your PC and Linux on your iPod

PLEASE NOTE: If you raise your voltage on your CPU, it is HIGHLY recommended that you get a better cooling system than the stock one. *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED*

then your CPu will throttle so you can't really hurt it by temps. IF you jack the volts upto 2v then yes the thing is going to be fried in seconds.

I have 5 case fans which keep the CPU very cool because the CPU fan is constantly using fresh, cool air. It stays much cooler than it should so temp isnt really a problem. I can get it up to 2.7 ghz but nothing past that. Thats also with ram ratio and voltage on auto.
