Pentium 4 vs Core 2 Duo
Hello,
I am looking at getting a new laptop (I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1150 Laptop w/ Pentium 4 @ 2.8 Ghz) for personal/business use.
Not taking into account other factors such as memory, motherboard, etc, how does a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz compare to a Core 2 Duo at 2 Ghz?

go to tomshardware.com and click on CPU Charts on the right
they say that a 2.8Ghz P4 520 does their lame test in 5:05, the Core 2 Duo @ 2.13Ghz does the same test in 3:10, the P4 got 834 in 3DMark 06 while the Core 2 Duo got 1892, and for PCMark 05/CPU the P4 got 3522 while the Core 2 Duo got 5489
so doing the math on those numbers would say that the Core 2 Duo @ 2.13Ghz is 1.8 times faster then a P4 @ 2.8Ghz, and that's with the slowest Core 2 Duo, its not a Conroe

Theres really no comparison ... the performance is multiple times that of a c2d ...
But sadly... there is a problem with getting rid of a p4 ... you will nee to find an alternate heater for your room in the wintertime LOL

wait...i hope you meant that the Core 2 Duo has better performance then the P4.
Core 2 Duo is a the second gen of the intel dual cores, it whips P4s in terms of performance. With two cores you can do more or less twice as much as a normal single core P4.
Also you can easily overclock the Core 2 Duos to 2.8+ on air alone...i have seen E6300 overclocked to over 3.0 on air cooling only.

Since you are buying a laptop, don't even consider a Pentium 4. The Core 2 has much better power management (read: actually HAS power management), so your battery life will be significantly better. A Core 2 solo has much better performance than a Pentium 4, so whether you go single or dual core, I highly recommend the Core 2 over any other chip. The benefit of a second core will only be noticeable if you do a lot of multi-tasking, or if you use applications that are multi-threaded (designed to use multiple cores simultaneously). If you use Photo Shop, do a lot of video/audio encoding or plan to play modern games on your new laptop, the dual-core version is a good investment.

pentium 4's are the worse choice for laptop as you're battery life will be dismal. Pentium M's were my favorite processors for laptops. Still haven't made the leap to the whole core scene. Windows 2003 runs more than fine on Pentium M 1.5 no vista here!

my friend went through 4 P4 notebooks before they decided to just send him a nice desktop. The last one melted right through the motherboard.

Core2 has just too much future proof power that its going to save you in the long run, even if there was a minor performance difference now
