who, in their right mind, would actually use four CPU-intensive programs at the same time?

I suppose, but it seems like overkill. dual core is even overkill for the average user.

That's true. But then again, a few years ago we would have thought that a 3.4ghz 64-bit processor was overkill for the average user.

In my opinion cpu speed is quickly becoming a side-key. What I mean is that with the new surge in music/video editing and multi-tasking (especially with media-center) the new considerations are video cards and memory more than cpu speed. 3Ghz processor or so is plenty fast for nearly anything the regular consumer will do now-a-days. Without the graphics engine to back it up though, that processor isn't worth a dime.

    Now that's a verbal overkill...

Hehheh.....yes. Some of the programs I run and the projects I do in them totally eat and butcher CPU power. Mostly this refers to rendering high end 3D graphics and animations.
